Stonemasonry or stonecraft refers to the art of constructing structures and sculptures using stone. It involves shaping and arranging stones to form sturdy buildings or intricate sculptures.

There are two primary types of stonemasonry: Ashlar masonry, which involves dressing the stone to precise shapes using tools, and rubble masonry, where natural, unaltered stones are used.

In the Cordilleras, one notable example of stonemasonry is the "kabite" or stone wall, which is a traditional form of construction that showcases the indigenous stone-laying techniques of the Cordillerans. This method involves stacking naturally occurring stones in a way that ensures stability, with minimal reshaping required. The stones are carefully arranged and fitted together, with smaller stones used to fill in any gaps, while compacted soil is used as backfill to support the structure.

Historically, this technique was essential for building walls that supported terraces on the mountainous slopes of the Cordilleras, where rice paddies, vegetable gardens, and residential lots were built. The use of stone for construction in this region is a response to the region's challenging mountainous terrain.

In Baguio City, recent years have seen the emergence of tourist attractions that showcase this remarkable craftsmanship. The Igorot Stone Kingdom was one of the first to highlight the artistry of stone-laying, and this year, a new attraction has joined the scene.

DRAGON STONE CASTLE (also known as Dragon Treasure Castle), located at Block 8 Jade’s Street, Irisville Subdivision, Phase 2 San Carlos Heights, Irisan, Baguio, is quickly becoming a must-visit site for both locals and tourists. This impressive castle draws inspiration from the indigenous stone-laying techniques of the Cordillerans, similar to the Igorot Stone Kingdom.

The castle’s architecture evokes images of Dubrovnik’s Old Town, with its fortress-like structures reminiscent of those seen in the popular TV series Game of Thrones. Beyond its stunning stone craftsmanship, the location offers breathtaking views, especially when the fog rolls in and envelops the area, enhancing the magical atmosphere. The panoramic vistas from the site promise to be equally spectacular, offering visitors a unique experience of both natural beauty and architectural wonder.
